About

Eden Media enables young people in the Eden area to use creative multimedia resources in a fun way to support youth participation in issues and decisions that affect them and their local area.

Taking on the role of social reporters, young people can use different types  of new media – digital photos, videos and audio recordings, online surveys, text messages and online discussions spaces – to communicate feedback from themselves and from people they interview. Feedback can cover things like how young people feel about their area, the services that are delivered to them,  what is good and/or bad about their area and the things that are happening there.  The aim is that digital material will be edited by young people and uploaded by them to the site.

Forthcoming engagement projects include the Pendragon Festival on 29th August 2009 and participation about the New Squares Development in Penrith.

Who’s developing the site?

Eden Media is being developed with support from Eden District Council’s Consultation Officer, Anna Malina, and the Children and Young People’s Officer, Dawn Hurton. Steve Thompson set up this site and is providing technical support and new media training. Eden’s local band ‘Saving the Silence’ and other young people are co-creators, taking on the role of social reporters and learning how to interview and upload new media results to the website. The goal is to enable a new media youth website that is for young people by young people.

Influence what happens

YOU have a voice and it’s really important that you have a channel to say what you think.

Participate using Eden Media and your views can then be passed on to the people who make the decisions. They will listen to what you say and take account of your views when considering options.

Stay informed, take part and share what you know

Make a point of visiting Eden Media regularly to find out what’s happening. Check out the ‘Get Involved’ section for more information. Bear with us since this is a new initiative and we still have a few hills to climb.

Please share any ideas you have for how the site could be designed and developed in future. Your input is really important. You might want to write a story about something that bothers you, participate as a ‘news broadcaster,’  generate content for engagement exercises, offer pictures of events or developments, or take on the role of a social reporter.  If you want to take part or find out how you can get the knowledge and skills to participate, please get in touch with Anna Malina, email anna.malina@eden.gov.uk.
